SKATEBOARDING AT THE PARIS 2024 OLYMPICS: QUALIFYING CRITERIA

The Paris 2024 Olympic Games is only 14 months away and the qualification process is well underway. So, let’s take a look at the qualifying criteria and explore the road to Paris 2024.

After its successful debut at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, skateboarding is back on the program for the Paris 2024 Games, and the IOC has announced that the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games will see skateboarding become a permanent Olympic sport.

A total of 88 skaters will compete in the Paris 2024 skateboarding competition with an equal representation of 22 male and 22 female skaters per event in both street and park. This is an increase of eight skaters from Tokyo. The Paris 2024 event will take place at La Concorde on 27 - 28 July for street and on 6 - 7 August for park.

As the host country, France will be granted four quotas - one for each event. Additionally, a special universality quota has been introduced to ensure representation from under-represented countries. This quota will function as a limited invitational system, with countries that have a registered skateboarder ranked within the top 50 of their discipline in the OWSR (Olympic World Skateboarding Rankings) at the end of the Olympic qualification period being eligible for this quota. The allocation of universality quotas will be determined by the Tripartite Commission of the IOC.

The remaining 80 quota places will be allocated based on ranking points earned from various competitions leading up to the Games. These competitions include World Championships, Pro Tour events, five-star events, and three-star events. Each National Olympic Committee (NOC) can secure a maximum of 12 quota places, with three available for men and three for women in each event. The culmination of the qualification process will be the Olympic Qualifier Series, a newly introduced three-event qualifier scheduled between March and June 2024, where the final decisive points will be up for grabs.

It's worth noting that the qualification pathway for Paris 2024 differs from that of Tokyo 2020. Continental championships will now be ranked as 'three-Star' events, and National Championships will not be included in the qualification criteria.
